Manchester United are firmly in the running to sign Barcelona starlet Nico Gonzalez, according to reports.
The 16-year-old midfielder had been one of three youngsters picked to step up to play for the club’s Juvenil A team next season, the final level of the club’s famed La Masia youth academy.
Barcelona are growing increasingly concerned over his long-term future however with the youngster stalling on signing a new deal, having received ‘huge’ offers from abroad, according to Sport.
United are eager to convince the teenager to follow the path once taken by current Barcelona star Gerard Pique and are hopeful a relationship between Nico’s father Fran Gonzalez and the club’s head of youth recruitment David Harrison can help get it done.
Fran Gonzalez, a Deportivo de La Coruña great, was given a youth coach role at City shortly after Pep Guardiola’s arrival in 2016 with reports at the time suggesting his son would also sign for the club as a 14-year-old.
Gonzalez briefly worked alongside Harrison at City until the latter was poached by United later that year as part of their major overhaul at youth level.
Sport report Fran’s contract at City ended this summer and suggest his good relationship with Harrison bodes well for United’s chances of signing up the youngster, with their head of youth recruitment said to be impressed with his development.
While no final decisions have been made, Barcelona have already lost a handful of their brightest prospects this summer.
Pablo Moreno is expected to join Juventus in the coming days with Adria Bernabe to become Manchester City’s latest recruit at youth level.
Joel Lopez is said to have already told the club he will not sign a contract with them and will instead join Arsenal while Robert Navarro, perhaps the brightest prospect of the group, has already signed for Monaco.
