Mesothelioma meaning

Malignant mesothelioma (me-zoe-thee-lee-O-muh) is a type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs (mesothelium). Mesothelioma is an aggressive and deadly form of cancer. It’s treatments available, but for many people with this disease, a cure is not possible, for that the patient life expectancy is become low day by day. Doctors divide mesothelioma into different types based on what part of the mesothelium affectsDiagnosis of this disease availables in many country. But the “mesothelioma compensation” is very high for us. It most often affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs (pleura). Other, rarer types of mesothelioma affect tissue in the abdomen, around the heart and around the testicles. It doesn’t include a form of noncancerous (benign) tumor that occurs in the chest and is sometimes called benign mesothelioma or solitary fibrous tumor.

The stage of the disease

The stage of the disease, cell type, and location of the tumor(s) are the most important factors for a patient’s survival. Factors such as the patient’s overall health, age, and whether the cancer has spread also impact prognosis. According to a 2017 report by the Centers for Disease Control, 2,400 – 2,800 people are diagnosed with this disease in the United States each year. People who have worked with or been exposed to asbestos have the highest risk of developing that disease. After being exposed to asbestos, it symptoms can take 20 – 50 years to appear. Till now this disease oncologists are doing research on this and we don’t know how far it can be taken.

Symptom

The first signs of mesothelioma often vagues and similar to other conditions. If you are concerned, see your general practitioner (GP). It may take some time to be diagnosed, as the symptoms may come and go, and more commonconditions are likely to be investigated first. Let your GP know if you may have been exposed to asbestos in the past.Generally the symptoms may include:
·         Weight loss.
·         Fatigue
·         Problems with blood clotting
·         Fever
·         Night sweats
·         Pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs)
·         Pain in the chest or abdomen.
·         Muscle weakness.
·         Respiratory complications
·         Dry cough or wheezing.
·         Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

Pleural mesothelioma:

The symptoms of this type of disease originate in the chest. Pleural effusions (fluid buildup in the chest around the lungs) make it harder to breathe and causes chronic chest pain. Pleural mesothelioma forms in the pleura, the protective tissue surrounding the lungs. It accounts for approximately 75 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Patients with this type of disease typically experience:
  •          Pleural effusion, excess fluid buildup around the lung.
  •          Shortness of breath.
  •          Chest pains.
  •          Dry cough
  •          Weight loss.
  •        Difficulty swallowing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Pain in the low back or rib area
  • Swelling of the face or arms
·         Some patients also report diminished chest expansion and unusual breathing sounds.

Treatment

Researchers are testing several emerging treatment technologies in their quest for a cure, but mesothelioma specialists still primarily rely on traditional cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Peritoneal mesothelioma:

The symptoms of this type of disease start in the abdomen. Ascites(fluid buildup in the abdomen) causes pain and fatigue that is often mistaken for gas or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It’s begins in the peritoneum, the protective lining of the abdominal cavity. It accounts for 20 to 25 percent of all mesothelioma diagnoses. This types of patients typically experience:
In most cases, peritoneal mesothelioma does not spread to the lungs. It shows to spread to the other abdominal areas, such as ovaries, liver, or intestines. This metastasis often causes it to become discovered and sometimes misdiagnosed. Symptoms of stomach pains or ascites sometimes results in a misdiagnosis of hernias or a simple stomachache.

Treatments

Treatment options dependents on the stage a peritoneal mesothelioma patient is diagnosed with. There are more curative treatment options, like cytoreduction surgery, for patients with earlier stages. Patients in the later stages may receive palliative treatments, like radiation or chemotherapy. Another palliative treatment option may be a paracentesis to drain the fluid buildup in the abdomen. The most successful treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma has been the combination of cytoreduction surgery and HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy). The cytoreduction removes most of the cancerous tumor, and HIPEC uses to kill the remaining cells.

Pericardial mesothelioma:

This type of disease, originating in the heart, also causes chest pain. Fluid builds up in the protective sac lining the heart, causing the heart to work harder. It starts in the pericardium, the lining of the heart. Symptoms common to this type of disease patients include:
  •          Chest pain
  • Heartbeats irregular.
  •  Pericardial thickness.
  •  Pericardial effusion (fluid buildup).
  • Dypsnea, or difficulty breathing
  • Persistent coughing
  • Heart palpitation
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
There are many doctors available in every country and it’s treatments under development. A misdiagnosis usually happens because doctors diagnose less than 1 percent of pericardial mesothelioma cases per year and the symptoms look like other diseases. In USA top mesothelioma doctors available for certain times but treatment is not good as effected.
Wait wait wait! There is not end, it’s just begin. If you think that this disease is just a small thing, it’s wrong.. Wait for next article…
